5 Books that CHANGED MY LIFE [MENTAL HEALTH]

Getting a little vulnerable today and sharing some personal stuff with you because I think it’s important to talk about mental health. I’m sharing 5 books that changed my life, truly. All of them are available in audiobook format, which is how I “read” them. Back in 2018 I sought professional help to treat my ADHD which was manifesting in a multitude of ways, namely anxiety and depression. At first It was hard for me to admit that I needed professional help and I experienced a lot of shame and guilt for feeling depressed in the first place. My line of thinking was “I have SO much to be grateful for in my life, I’m so spoiled for still being unhappy”. I was offered anti-depressants but I decided to try to help myself get to the root of my mental health problems before I took another prescription. To be clear, I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with taking medication, I take it for my ADHD. I just knew that for me personally, it wasn’t the solution I was looking for. That’s where these books come in.

It started with a TED talk on Youtube, actually. Someone in the comments recommended a book called “The Power of Vulnerability” by Brené Brown. I downloaded it from Audible and the experience I had while listening to it was incredible. I felt like finally someone was describing how I was feeling! Someone “got it”. This was the first book in my mental health healing journey, and if you don’t read any others, this is the one I’d most recommend. Turns out, the way you think about yourself and your coping mechanisms are formed in childhood and unless you actively try to unlearn those habits and tendencies, you can get stuck in a cycle of feeling unhappy and like there’s something wrong without knowing why. These five books aren’t the only ones that helped but they have had the most significant impact on my mental health. I really hope that you can listen to them or read them and that they can help if you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or just feeling unhappy without knowing why.
